How to Vet a Custom Packaging Supplier: 9 Questions to Ask Before You Order
Most packaging horror stories — washed-out print, mailers that tear in transit, an order that arrives three weeks late during peak season — could have been avoided with a 10-minute conversation upfront. Here are the nine questions to ask any custom packaging supplier before you commit.
1. What''s your real MOQ, and what''s the price at each break?
A "low MOQ" page can mean 100 units or 5,000. Get the per-unit price at 250, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 in writing.
2. Are the samples representative of production?
Some suppliers send hand-picked golden samples. Ask: "Will my production order look exactly like this sample, including print sharpness and material thickness?"
3. What''s your reprint and refund policy if I receive defective stock?
A confident supplier offers a written guarantee — typically free reprint or refund on defective units above a small tolerance (industry standard is ±5%).
4. What''s your GSM (thickness) spec — and do you guarantee it?
Bubble mailers should be 80–120 GSM outer; poly mailers 2.5–3 mil. Cheap suppliers spec one number and ship something thinner. Ask for a guarantee in writing.
5. How consistent is print color across batches?
Reorder #2 is where suppliers cut corners. Ask if they color-match to Pantone, and what their batch-to-batch tolerance is (ΔE under 3 is acceptable).
6. What''s your peak-season capacity (Q4) and lead time?
Standard lead time of 14 days can balloon to 35+ in October–November. Get peak lead times in writing if you ship holiday volume.
7. Who owns my artwork and dies?
You should own your design files. Plates/dies should either be reusable on reorder (no rebill) or refundable.
8. Can I see references or a portfolio of brands you produce for?
Public-facing brand work is the easiest credibility check. Ask for 3 references in your category.
9. What''s included in the quoted price — and what''s extra?
Watch for hidden fees: setup, plate, die, artwork rework, sample, freight, fuel surcharges, palletization. A reputable supplier shows one all-in price.
Red flags to walk away from
- No physical address, only a contact form.
- Refuses to send a paid sample.
- Quote is dramatically cheaper than everyone else (usually means thinner material or hidden fees later).
- Vague answers about reprint policy.
- No proof or mockup before production.
