Biodegradable packaging is made from materials that break down naturally through microbial action — bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms convert them into water, CO₂, and biomass. The most common biodegradable shipping materials are kraft paper, corrugated cardboard, and plant-based bioplastics derived from corn starch, sugarcane, or PLA.
In ecommerce, the practical eco options come down to three tiers:
- Best: Kraft paper mailers — fully biodegradable, curbside recyclable, from renewable forests.
- Better: Recycled-content bubble and poly mailers — diverts plastic from landfill, lower carbon footprint than virgin.
- Good: Standard recyclable poly mailers (#4 LDPE) — store drop-off recyclable, lightweight, low shipping emissions.
The greenest choice depends on your product. Soft goods like apparel don't need bubble protection — a kraft or recycled poly mailer is usually the right call. Fragile items often justify a recycled-content bubble mailer to prevent damage (and the carbon cost of replacements).
